How can you support San Diego Businesses & Employees In Need

We recognize that money can be an obstacle right now, but the good news is, there are other ways you can support beyond your wallet! We also want to make sure that employees that have been laid off can get what they need! Here are some ways you can support employees and businesses right now + our list of favorite local spots.

Yelp Reviews: Show your favorite business some love right now! Head to their Yelp page and leave a review.
LinkedIn Recommendations: Know a friend out of work? Offering to leave a LinkedIn recommendation can be key. One quick note I found out while doing this is they have to invite you to leave a recommendation, so make sure to ask for the invite so you can support.
Resume Reviews: Are you a good writer? Offer to review your friend’s resumes and cover letters. That can always be one of the biggest challenges when trying to find a new job.
Connections: The biggest question I try to ask friends out of work is “Who can I connect you to? And for those who are out of work, don’t be afraid to ask your friends for introductions. I had someone reach out to me who was laid off, and I was able to connect them to someone looking for a contractor. This was all because he asked!
Just a simple call, text or share: Don’t ever underestimate the power of connection or sharing! Check-in with your local friends that are affected by this, call or text! Also, make sure to share what they are doing on social media!

We ordered from this company last week and were so impressed with what they are doing! As soon as COVID-19 hit, they knew all of their fellow friends were going to be hit hard with Farmer’s Market shutdowns. They came together, spent 17 hours (overnight) to put together a website where you can find all of your favorite Farmer’s Market friends! Sunday orders go out for delivery on Wednesdays. Wednesday orders go out for delivery on Sunday.

This is a new one for us but we were excited to see it. They currently have a mix of locally sourced items and samples from companies. Eventually, they will have a shop page where you can buy individual items from local farmers and makers!

We have been enjoying these yummy tortillas from the farmers market for weeks. I was looking for a grain-free tortilla for our weekly vegan enchiladas and I was worried they wouldn’t wrap without breaking. I had asked the owner when I bought them and she reassured me that they would wrap without breaking! They do that and more! They are super yummy, I ordered online and one day later they showed up at our door!

You can pre-order bread and drive up to pick up. If you can’t go all the way to Carlsbad for this delicious bread, you can grab it at Jensen's Market & Seaside Market! It is one of our local favorites. They can also slice the bread for you at their main store (since it comes in a loaf).

We met Janeé the owner at our event in the Fall. Their Churros are AMAZING. Also, their Cacao is sourced from its original home, Mexico. Not only does Madre Churros and Cacao sell quality cacao bars, nibs, and cacao powder, they also pair it with deliciously hot vegan churro bites.

Where do I start with our love affair with these amazing croutons! They are vegan, if you haven’t guessed by now, I love many vegan products (sadly can’t do dairy but I do still eat meat). Once you have one bite, you will finish the bag. You can order on their website and you won’t be disappointed. Make sure to order one bag for eating and the rest for your salads.

We just got our first box of Avocados and citrus from these fabulous people! We are big fans of making avocado toast in our house, and their produce exceeds our expectations! Danny made me avocado toast one morning and for the first time, it didn’t get brown when I put it away in the refrigerator. This product comes from the owners of Royale (listed below), you can grab your box there along with some awesome Tamales that benefit the head chef’s family.

They are shipping to your front door and you won’t be disappointed! You would never guess these were Vegan. I would recommend ordering multiple because one won’t be enough. They are usually at the Farmer’s market, but with the craziness, they are shipping them out.

We just ordered this yummy Vegan cheese for the first time last week! I am always on the hunt for the best Vegan cheese and they did an amazing job. You can grab them through the market box, it stretches well and their packaging is gorgeous!

Ok I know this doesn’t fall into the market category, but these are some folks that are so special to us! They have taken care of Walter since he was 4 months old and are the most wonderful humans on the planet. They are unable to be open right now BUT you can grab a gift card so when they are open you could send your puppy there or even get them a bath or haircut. Megan the general manager and her husband are the kindest people and Julia gives amazing haircuts and baths for your furry friend.

I was so excited to find this local, organic, non-GMO produce company delivering straight to your doorstep! Right now it looks like they have a waitlist for their CSA box, but they have some beautiful soaps that look fun in the meantime. Where do I start? I always worry when I mention them to friends because I fear they will become too busy, but this is by far the best produce market in San Diego! They are standardly wholesale for restaurants and they source from many different farmers. We worry with all of the restaurants shut down they may not get enough love. Their prices are amazing and fair. Nothing has prices, but never fear, they show you the bill before you pay and you can ask to put anything back that may be too expensive. They also tell you as they are checking you out if something is more expensive than normal!

18. Siesel's Meats & Deli & Iowa Meat Farms

One word “Benny!” Dare I say they have the best Carne Asada in town? Such a fun local market, they have amazing meats. There also have fabulous flour tortillas that I can never remember the name of, but just look for the unmarked tortilla bags by the meats!

We heart Jensens! Danny’s company shares a headquarters with them and they are wonderful people! This is a family-owned business and Danny would tell you to grab the Tuna Sandwich! All I have to say is “Get to the dock early.” Danny tried to go last week to grab Uni at 8:20 am and there was a line down the Harbor (6 feet apart of course). This is such a great spot on Saturday mornings to grab fresh fish! Just make sure you eat before and bring your tea or coffee, it will be a bit!

24. Mitchs Seafood

I can’t believe I almost forgot this place (maybe because I secretly don’t want the line to be out the door like it always is). This is one of our favorite spots in San Diego, the line is worth the wait! When they are open again. make sure to sit on the patio, eat your good and watch the boats on the harbor. We LOVE the octopus tostada, the shrimp cocktail is amazing, also a big fan of the calamari. You really can’t go wrong here. The other day they had fresh crab for $4 a pound (pretty solid in my book).

You guys, this team has just gone above and beyond! They have an amazing Kale Salad and Crispy Chicken Sandwich. We found them a few years back at the San Diego Wine & Food Festival and we were so glad when they opened a location. For $5 addition to your order, you can donate meals to a laid-off restaurant worker. Every day they are opening their doors to those who have been laid off in the restaurant industry to make sure they get warm meals, this is awesome!

These gals have such a special place in our hearts. I will keep the story short, but many moons ago when Danny bartended at a special place called Motus Supper Club he met the Coulon Sisters who own Little Lion. They make everything from scratch, they are wonderful humans and you have to support them. When everything hit and they had to shut down, they made sure to let their team take home all of the food for groceries. These tacos are insane. We met Thai & Scott on our trip to Israel last year and we are so grateful we did. We are so inspired by the impact they are making on the San Diego community. They have started a fund to donate meals for hospital workers and medical professionals at assisted living homes. Beyond the kindness, their tacos are AMAZING. Get the pastrami or ahi taco you won't be sorry. We did a taco party pack to-go from there this past weekend and we loved it!

Also owned by Spitfire Tacos so yummy. Can I just say, finally a place that chops their salads! There is nothing worse than a salad that has a bunch of big pieces of lettuce and barely any dressing! They have awesome pre-made salads, or you can make your own. I love the poke bowl from here.

I have passed by this so many times, and I am so grateful for the recommendation from Bay Park Fish Company. I am so craving a date night at an old school Italian restaurant with a nice comfy booth and bottle of Chianti. Costa Azul in Coronado is doing a $35 meal for 4 that includes a ton of food and then every night of the week is a different special where the family meal is only 29! The carnitas and enchiladas look awesome! This is a San Diego family-owned restaurant, can’t wait to give it a try!

This family-owned restaurant has been such a San Diego staple for quite some time. Usually, the line is around the corner to get a table, but now they have family meals to-go. Make sure to follow their Instagram for menu options. If you can get yourself the Angela pizza, do it! That was my favorite when I used to eat dairy. All of their pizzas are out of this world. They are also doing a 3-course Easter dinner! $39 for family meals for 4. They are usually including a salad or soup, a pasta dish of your choice and then either a meat/seafood dish or two pizzas!

We have so much LOVE for this company. Not only did they do our wedding, but they are currently dropping sweet treats off to our heroic nurses, doctors and medical teams at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
